About six months ago, we talked about a new JAMA study showing marijuana was becoming more popular in older adults. Now, another recent study from the Annals of Internal Medicine supports this conclusion.
The new study concluded that cannabis use is rising among baby boomers in the US, especially men. One study author, Bill Jesdale, an assistant professor of population and quantitative health science at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worchester, suggested that these findings reflect changing cannabis attitudes. “It seems that something has happened to the country as a whole,” he stated, explaining that older adults are using cannabis regardless of legalization.
The study collected data from 2016-2018, looking at almost 172,000 adults ages 55 and up from 19 states and two territories.
Some interesting findings:
The highest rates of cannabis use were in men ages 60-64 years.
Cannabis use doubled among men ages 65-69 years and 70-74 years.
There were fewer changes in cannabis use among women.
The study authors suggested explanations for increased use:
Lower stigma leads to more willingness to use cannabis.
Lowered inhibitions against using cannabis
Claims of medicinal benefit
Researchers studied cannabis use in older adults due to concerns about the effects on patients this age – including drug interactions and the possibility of confusion, dizziness, falls, and accidents.
The team at MyCureAll is happy to hear that cannabis is becoming more acceptable. People who need it are using it and finding that it helps. If you are using medical marijuana, no matter what your age, though, always check with your healthcare provider to make sure it is safe for you. Also, check with your healthcare provider to ensure that it does not interact with any medications (prescription or over-the-counter) you take.
